HMS (Heavy Melting Scrap) has two grades as HMS1 and HMS2. HMS is widely traded and is the obsolete scarp and this is iron and steel obtained from demolished and dismantled items. The main difference in HMS1 and HMS2 is that HMS1 doesn’t have the blackened and galvanized steel, whereas HMS2 does.

The ISRI (institute of scrap recycling industries) has the following Categories further:-

  • ISRI 200- HMS 1: ISRI 201 (HMS 1): Same as ISRI 200 but pieces smaller than 36x18 inches.
  • ISRI 202- HMS 1: Similar as ISRI 200 but pieces smaller than 60x18 inches.
  • ISRI 203 -HMS 2: Steel scrap, black and galvanized, 1�?�8 inch and higher in thickness.
  • ISRI 204 -HMS 2: Similar as ISRI 203 but pieces smaller than 36x18 inches.
  • ISRI 205 -HMS 2: Similar as ISRI 204 but it may contain automotive scrap but for thin gauge material.
  • ISRI 206 (HMS 2): Same as ISRI 205 but pieces must be smaller than 60x18 inches.
  • HMS is traded as a mixture of 1 & 2, premium blend 80:20, lower grades 70:30, 60:40. While other main heavy scrap grades are Japan’s H3 and A3 from CIS.
